Leeds helped Arsenal in 97/98 98/99 ManUtd still won the title more than Arsenal lost it. Needing to beat 4th away is not an easy thing for a team going down the home straight. After all ManUtd had just had 2 points robbed of them away to 7th Liverpool by David Elleray. 2002/03 ManUtd were winning that title anyway it just made it a win with games to spare.

@@cockoffgewgle4993 Leeds beat ManUtd the season before this which ultimately cost ManUtd the 97/98 title. Even more so the fact that Keane also got injured in that game which made him miss nearly the entire season he was the new ManUtd captain after Cantona had just left so that was doubly lucky for Arsenal who ended up winning by half a point (1 point with worse GD than ManUtd) and they got what turned out to be an important draw at Elland road that season, as well as 2 imperative narrow wins vs ManUtd. In 98/99 David Elleray was the idiot who put ManUtd in this situation 0-2 up and cruising at Anfield on May5th before giving Liverpool a pen for no reason at all & sending off Irwin keeping Carragher, Ince etc...on the pitch. Finished 2-2. But Arsenal weren't in total command even if they won this game I think they would've only been 1st by like 1 goal different or something. ManUtd could afford to draw their penultimate game vs Blackburn after this I think Ferguson wasn't even trying to win because he thought his mate Brian Kidd's team could still stay up with a draw until he was told in the post match interview that Blackburn are in fact down now. Anyway Leeds away is a hard fixture. Having to beat 4th away is in no way a guarantee and ManUtd only drew there that season. Leeds then came 3rd the following season then got to Champions league semi-final the season after whilst finishing 4th again followed by 5th. People saying Arsenal lost this title rather than ManUtd winning it are foolish. It's funny that whenever ManUtd lose a title in a more slender manner no one ever says oh ManUtd lost it the other team whether it be Arsenal, Chelsea or ManCity won it and deserved it???? ManUtd have also won many titles at a canter where they get less credit than when Arsenal, Chelsea & ManCity have won them by literally nothing margins.

@@cddb5408 Yeah, I think I was at that game. I just consider them different eras. That was George Graham, this was O'Leary. We didn't beat Man U once under O'Leary, I do believe (a period of ~4 years). Keane injured himself kicking Haaland off the ball lol. Then we beat them the first game after O'Leary left, under Venables. When Rio returned, in 2003. Our games against Arsenal, under O'Leary, were like wars. They were much better than us, footballing wise, but we turned the games into a fight, which was much easier to do back then. Beat them twice at Highbury and once at home. They also got applauded off at Elland Road after smashing us for 4, which was a rare sight. That sounds like the kind of immoral, self-interested shit Fergie would do.
@cddb5408
@cddb5408 2 жыл бұрын
@@cockoffgewgle4993 Well settling for a draw because your own team don't have to take any unnecessary risks only need 1 point to go into the last game at home with it 100% in your own hands, isn't as immoral as deliberately losing to change the title destination like what Liverpool did in their last home game of the season vs Chelsea in 2009/10 because it was the first year ManUtd could go above Liverpool on league title wins, Chelsea had to win hence Gerrard's deliberate backpass to Drogba at 0-0. Pity when ManUtd came to Anfield that season Liverpool fought & won at all costs. It is supposed to be a hard fixture on paper and ManUtd were the best team that season were already robbed in the head-to-heads vs Chelsea which was the only reason they were 1 point infront they were 2nd best in those games. It's also unacceptable because ManUtd were going for a record 4 in a row that year. As it turned out with that 1999 Blackburn game ManUtd could've actually given Blackburn a 1-0 win and still won the title on GD. In fact goals scored it would've been.

@@FootkerSnookball Arsenal won the league in 98 with 2 games left. Rested players/didn’t take those 2 games seriously as had cup final coming up. Lost those 2 games then.. so it looked like a closer title race than it was
@FootkerSnookball
@FootkerSnookball 9 ай бұрын
@@arsenalcobain No the 98/99 season looked closer than it was. ManUtd had 98/99 in their hands the whole way through and most of 97/98 as well (despite both season's ManUtd competing strongly in ChampionsLeague whilst Arsenal were hardly in Europe both seasons compared to ManUtd). Arsenal had 2 away games last 2 games of 97/98 which is very rare and the only reason it looks like it was won earlier, they'd got all their home games out of the way and the last 2 games for Arsenal would've been lost whenever they were played if you look at Arsenal's record in those away fixtures vs those clubs in other seasons around that time they'd usually get either zero or 1 point out of a possible 6 and ManUtd were always winning their last 2 fixtures. Arsenal also wouldn't have stood a chance without maximum points vs ManUtd home&away and at Highbury they got a 3-2 win via decisions. Scholes brought down in the box at 2-2 by Winterburn no pen given Winterburn then set up Arsenal's late winner that decision swung 6pts in Arsenal's favour and they still needed to beat ManUtd again and did with another late goal vs half a ManUtd B-team. So those 2 wins plus getting all the home fixtures out of the way not only helped Arsenal win the PL but also the double because as you said they got to rest players for that FAcup final which even there wasn't as comfortable a 2-0 final win as ManUtd's vs the same opponents a year later as Shearer hit the post at 1-0 vs Arsenal 98. The last thing Arsenal would've wanted to do first game they're officially crowned champions is lose 4-0 and they did, may have rested a few but still had a good team out so what would it have been instead, a loss by 2 goals? Still zero points. ManUtd had more impressive results than Arsenal. They won at Anfield 1-3 that season for the 2nd consecutive season that scoreline. ManUtd had far superior GD more goals for, less against, had ZERO comprehensive defeats all season where as Arsenal had quite a few. Some other defeats for ManUtd included a freak turnaround away to Coventry 1-2 up with about 5mins to go lost 3-2 and Arsenal won the title because they drew 1 more game than ManUtd over 38 games after all the other fortunate things mentioned they were lucky enough Cantona retired just before the season but losing Keane early on and other injuries to Pallister, Giggs, Schmeichel, Johnsen etc... In 98/99 Arsenal could've won this Leeds game and then ManUtd would've gone for the win the next day vs Blackburn who were managed by BrianKidd (Ferguson's mate who was in ManUtd's staff earlier that season before he got the Blackburn job) and Blackburn were fighting for survival and Ferguson genuinely believed a draw would suit both teams Blackburn tried to win because they needed to, ManUtd were merciful and also taking it easy because they had 1 day less rest than Arsenal before the last day (not to mention ManUtd are going forthe treble after the hardest possible cup draws they could've randomly got while Arsenal's whole season is on that final PL game). Finished 0-0 Ferguson was pleased in post match interview until it was confirmed Blackburn are now down he then looked very subdued. Not to mention on May5th DavidElleray completely robbed ManUtd of a deserved win with several awful decisions to get Liverpool back in the game. That's the only reason if Arsenal had won this away fixture vs 4th in the league (which is obviously no given) they very briefly had slight advantage but it was also 1of those situations where it was in the hands of both title challengers ManUtd as well. Also at one stage during the last day ManUtd were 3pts ahead with better GD but it finished 1point ahead with better GD which is still more than Arsenal won by the previous season. DavidElleray also favoured Arsenal in FAcup semi-final games vs ManUtd that season (most bizarrely disallowed goal when RoyKeane scored in the first SF etc...). Even more reason why ManUtd's treble is so much more impressive than Man$ity's with VAR nowadays and no cup replays taking it's toll on the team and no strong enough challengers either. Arsenal in that era were way better than nowadays. I think Arsenal were the 2nd best team in 97/98 & 98/99 which can still mean they're talanted and they were I just think ManUtd were better (Wenger thought Arsenal were best team in 2002/03 when ManUtd won...I disagree because ThierryHenry scored an offside brace in a 2-2 vs ManUtd who scored 2 legitimate goals and should've been 3pts better off than Arsenal after the game and ManUtd didn't just end up winning on GD or by 1point, it was by 5pts and again ManUtd had a better European campaign than Arsenal, not as much as 97/98 & 98/99 but still definitely better). Only 1 time in PL history has a team so solid like Arsenal 98/99 conceding only 17 still been beaten to the title, that's impressive. Beating a team who concedes 43 like City did in 22/23 not impress, most years that will happen.

@@FootkerSnookball a lot of issues with your comment but I don’t feel like a big debate. No one got more decisions that man utd, over the course of a season. Ferguson manipulated and scared referees. You said Arsenal beat them 3-2 at highbury due to decisions. There are loads of decisions over the course of a season, and Man united got loads, especially at old trafford. Fergie time for example. They only won 2 champions leagues with Ferguson because the European referees were not afraid of him (despite them winning god knows how many league titles) There is no way you can know that Arsenal would have definitely lost those last 2 games in 97/98. Football doesn’t work that way.

@tararoberts404 Not really. It's an away game vs 4th in the PL you can't be absolutely sure you're going to win this game. ManUtd didn't they drew. Arsenal & ManUtd nicked a PL title off eachother by 1 point this season & the previous and both times the champions took 4pts off Leeds games while the runner up took 3 from them. Also let's say Arsenal would've won this match 0-1 (as they didn't score many) instead of losing 1-0. Arsenal may have been ever so slight favourites but it would've still been one of those situations where it's in both team's hands ManUtd as well they would've probably gone for the win away to Blackburn the following day more instead of Ferguson being merciful towards his mate BrianKidd's relegation struggling Blackburn who needed to win to avoid the drop but Ferguson genuinely believed a draw would give Blackburn hope and also he didn't want to use too much energy on that game as they had a day's less rest than Arsenal before the last day so he settled for 0-0 thinking it was good for both ManUtd & Blackburn he was happy in the post match interview after until they confirmed Blackburn are down they needed to win that game then he looked very subdued. ManUtd actually could've afforded to give Blackburn a 1-0 win on that penultimate game and still win the title if the same happened like it did in Arsenal & ManUtd's final game of the season both winning by a goal.
